Rotifer Culture & Pre-enrichment

Obtain the highest growth rates for your rotifers

Provifeed®NannoPrime results in healthy, vigorous rotifers ready for the enrichment phase at high densities. The product contains freeze dried microalgae ensuring stable rotifer production (high fecundity) with high nutritional value (fatty acids, proteins, sterols, etc.) and inhibiting Vibrio spp. in the rotifer tanks. The product is ideal for rotifer batch, semi-continuous and continuous production. Provifeed®NannoPrime results in a high EPA level and high vitamin levels in the rotifers. These nutrients are not lost while harvesting and feeding to fish larvae. Using this rotifer culturing diet will save on costs and space, eliminating the algal production in the hatchery and are very easy to use.

Main benefits

Ready and easy-to-use algae

  • Freeze dried Nannochloropsis
  • Packed under protective atmosphere
  • Shelf life of 2 year

High stability of culture performance

High production efficiency

  • Provifeed®NannoPrime can be used for low and high density rotifers
  • Provifeed®NannoPrime can be used in batch culture systems, semi-continuous and continuous culture systems

Low labour cost

Rotifers cultured on Provifeed®NannoPrime have :

  • A high nutritional value (poly-unsaturated fatty acids, minerals, vitamins, phytosterols) for marine fish larvae production
  • A low bacterial load
  • A high daily egg ratio

Instructions for use

Preparation of the tank

  • Clean and disinfect the culture tank, airstones, air tubing prior to use (use e.g. 200 g/m³ active chlorine + detergent)
  • Disinfect the water of the tank with e.g. 5 g/m³ of active chlorine and aerate gently for 1 hour
  • Deactivate any remaining chlorine by adding 7 g/m³ sodium thiosulphate
  • Suspend airstones 15 cm above the tank floor, along the periphery and in the center to allow sedimentation and flushing of waste particles
  • Gentle aeration through the use of airstones: sufficient to keep the rotifers in suspension but at the same time allowing debris to sediment
  • The use of flock traps is advised to ensure a clean culture by the removal of waste floccules

Tank set up and optimal culture conditions

  • Temperature 25-28 °C
  • Salinity 20-25 ppt
  • Dissolved oxygen 5-7 ppm
  • NH4+ < 20 ppm; NH3 < 1 ppm
  • pH 7,5-8,5
  • aeration reasonably strong using airstones
  • batch culture : 3 days optimal, when water quality allows, a 4 day culture can be achieved

Mixing instructions

Resuspending Provifeed®NannoPrime

Method A:

Add a maximum of 10 g Provifeed®NannoPrime per liter seawater and allow to hydrate for 5 minutes. Normally NannoPrime will easily disperse upon gentle agitation using a magnetic stirrer.

Method B:

Alternatively blend during 2 minutes in seawater with a blender using a maximum of 10 gram per liter
Create a vortex first and then slowly add the Provifeed®NannoPrime to the water
Leave the product to rehydrate (5 min) and blend again for 1 minute

Sieve the suspension over a 50 µm sieve before feeding to the tanks

The homogenised feed can be stored up to 48 hours at maximum 4 °C. Shake before use

Feed the daily quantities in 4-6 rations or (semi-)continuously using peristaltic pumps

Apply the correct feeding regime depending on your culture strategy to assure the best production output and water quality

Feeding strategy

Depending on the quantities of rotifers required, it is possible to choose a strategy that will meet the demands of one’s system.

Starter rotifers should be clean, in good nutritional condition and have an egg-ratio of 20%.

The rotifer numbers illustrated in this feeding regime are indicative for Brachionus plicatilis clade L (‘L-type’) rotifers. Results can vary according to your culture conditions. Culture medium should be cloudy, very clear water may be an indication for underfeeding.
